Part 1 - Getting the Right Programs )

Part 2 - Subtitling )

b) Open the audio
- Audio -> Open audio from video
- Wait until it finishes reading from RAM

c) So how do you work with the audio?

Photobucket
* Legend: (from top to bottom) Audio timecodes, play button, text box

- The red brackets represent the area that the audio the line of subtitle will play for
- The play button will allow you to play the audio within the red brackets
- Drag the red brackets around until you find the audio that you want the subtitle to play between
- Type the line of subtitle in the text box
- Press enter or click Commit underneath the audio timecodes

You have successfully completed one line of subtitle. Repeat these steps until the video is finished.

d) How do you save it?
* Make sure you save it as Advanced Substation Alpha (.ass). The reason will be explained in Part 3
- File -> Save Subtitles as -> (type in filename) -> OK

2. Working with subtitles or captions already there

The second method is to work with the subtitles already there. This is used for captions.

Captions are a bit tricky, as they need a lot of typesetting. That is going to be covered in Part 3.

a) Open the video
* The video should be in .avi format. If it is not, convert it with Super ©: DOWNLOAD

b) Toggle the video timecodes

Photobucket
* Legend: 1. Seek video; 2. Play button; 3. Video timecodes; 4. Text box; 5. (from left to right box) Start Time, End Time, Total Time

[!!!] Before starting, make keyboard shortcuts for setting the start and end time to make the process go faster. How:
1. Select 'View' from the top menu bar, then Options.
2. Select 'Hotkeys' if it is not already highlighted in the left navigation bar.
3. Find 'Set End to Video' and create a keyboard shortcut that you are comfortable with.
4. Find 'Set Start to Video' and do step 3.
5. Click OK

- Click the seek video arrow
- Use the right or left arrows on your keyboard (or if it is not near the beginning, skip to the part of the video you want) to select a start time
- Use the keyboard shortcut previously set to set start time - you will notice the start time change (box 5 in above figure)
- Use the left or right arrows once again to select an end time
- Use the keyboard shortcut previously set to set end time - you will notice the start time change (box 5 in above figure)
- Type the line of subtitle in the text box
- Press enter

Now you have successfully completed one line of subtitle. Repeat these steps until the video is finished.

d) How do you save it?
* Make sure you save it as Advanced Substation Alpha (.ass). The reason will be explained in Part 3
- File -> Save Subtitles as -> (type in filename) -> OK

e) Fading in and out
We try to make the captions as close to the original captions as possible. Some captions fade in and out.
The code for fading in and out is {\fad (150,50)} 150 being the initial fading in, and 50 being the ending fading out. Fix it according to what the original captions look like by adding it to the line of subtitle.

TIPS:
- It is not recommended to have a new start time for each new line of subtitle.
Use the ending time of the last line of subtitle as your start time for the new line of subtitle if the person in the video keeps on talking. This makes the subtitles more smooth.

- Do not overcrowd the line of subtitle.
What this means is, do not put lines and lines of text into each line of subtitle. The viewers are watching the video and reading the subtitles at the same time, so make the line of subtitle concise and easy to read.

Eg. Instead of :

"Spidersorder Araneae are air-breathing chelicerate arthropods that have eight legs, and chelicerae modified into fangs that inject venom."

in one line, split it into 2+ lines:

"Spidersorder Araneae are air-breathing chelicerate"
"arthropods that have eight legs, and chelicerae"
"modified into fangs that inject venom."

- Do the dialogue first before doing the captions.
This is just a recommendation to make it less confusing. Captions sometimes occur while someone is speaking. Finish doing all dialogue and then add new lines of caption subtitles where you want them to be.

Part 3 - Typesetting )

Part 4 - Positioning )
Part 5 - Encoding )

SUBTITLES - PART 5 (Encoding the Video)

a) Open the video
-After opening VideoDub, open the video
-File -> Open video file

b) Putting in the subtitles
There are many subtitle filters in the VirtualDub folder. We will be using TextSub 2.23 because it is the only one that allows .ass files, which include more options (i.e. colors, font change, etc.).
-Video -> Filters...
-Add -> TextSub 2.23 -> OK -> Open... -> XXX.ass -> OK

c) Adding a logo (Optional)
If you want to add a logo, create a .bmp picture using a program of your choice.
- Video -> Filters...
- Add -> logo -> OK -> ... (Beside Logo image) -> logo.bmp

d) Compressing the video

Now, the video must be compressed in order for the video to keep its quality, file size, AND include the subtitles. There are many codec options to choose from, but most subbers use XviD Mpeg-4 codec or x264vfw (a H.264/MPEG-4 AVC codec). I'm not an expert on this subject, but I use XviD with a bitrate of 6000 for posting on Dailymotion (it requires a higher bitrate to look better when uploaded) and a bitrate of 1500 for regular downloading.

- Video -> Compression...

- (Underneath 'Select Video Compression...) XviD Mpeg-4 or x264vfw -> OK.

e) Encoding the video
Last step!!
- File -> Save as... -> XXX.avi -> Save

Now wait for it to finish encoding! It will look something like this:

When that is complete, you are done the entire subbing process! :)

TIPS:

- Make your logo's background transparent so that it doesn't cover as much of the video.
For the parts you want transparent, make that part BLACK. For example, for my own logo, the background is black, and the actual logo is white. Thus, in videos, you only see the logo, and not a black block.

In order to do this, follow the steps for c) above, but follow these steps afterwards:

- Check the box beside 'Enable per-pixel alpha blending using alpha channel'
- Check the box beside 'Alpha image' -> ... -> logo.bmp -> OK

- Preview your logo before adding it on to see how it fits in with the video.
If you want to see how it looks like, you can click 'Show Preview'. If you want to make it more opaque, you can play around with the opacity.

- Some streaming sites have time limits.
Don't worry, you don't need to download a new program. VirtualDub can help you with this as well.

*Legend: 1 -Starting and Ending Times 2 - Range of Video Trimmed

- Using the starting time arrow, select the part of your video you want to start with
- Using the ending time arrow, select the part of your video you want to end with
- File -> Save as -> XXX.avi -> OK
